How to Duplicate Project Templates in Basecamp

If you’re like me and use Basecamp for all of your Project Management needs, then you have most likely come across the following issue…

Basecamp does not currently have a “Project Duplication” feature. In other words, if you have created a Project Template you can very easily create new projects from this template. What you can’t do though is copy an existing Project Template into another template.

The process of manually recreating project templates can be extremely timeconsuming. Fortunately, after scouring the support forums on Basecamp, I learned that there is a workaround.

So, if you use Project Templates in Basecamp and would like to simply copy an existing Project Template (perhaps you have a similar project with just a few minor tweaks that also needs to be a template), then simply follow these steps and you will be good to go.

Steps to Copy a Project Template into a New Project Template

1) Go to the PROJECT TEMPLATE you want to copy and you’ll see
/projects/123456/…” in the address bar. Copy the number as that is your PROJECT ID.

2) Go to Create a New Template

3) In the address bar of the first page of the new template creation process you will see “/

project_templates/new” in the address bar

4) Add the following string to the end of the url in the address bar mentioned in STEP 3 then hit ENTER on your keyboard.

?project_id=123456

You’re done. Hope you find this as useful as I have.

Enjoy!
